Moderators:
Melissa Donald - President, BAB² Ventures
Melissa Donald started her career in commercial collections after college, working her way from secretary to manager of the company. In 2001, a recruiter for a small start up factoring company asked her if she knew what factoring was. Her answer: "That has something to do with invoices, right?". She was hired on the spot. Three months later, she was promoted to Operations Manager, managing a portfolio of construction receivables when no one knew what a mechanic's lien was. Her learning curve was a race straight up hill. She spent the next 4 years on airplanes and in court rooms learning all the things not to do. In 2007, with the backing of the lead investor of that failed company, Melissa went out on her own, not with the intention of changing the world, but with the intention of teaching the local business community about the financial power of the factoring tool - regardless of the dollar amount. Armed with the knowledge that a business owner who needs 5K is just as important as a business owner who needs 50K or 100K, she built a grassroots network of people who have come to know her as the go-to "lady who does that weird finance stuff". That network has helped her build her factoring company 100% by personal referral.
